January 29th, 2021

Wow - January is now a wrap!  This week has been busy finishing our owl unit!  Reader's Workshop presentations of owl books are going well.  The highlight was dissecting owl pellets today - as you can see below the students were very engaged as they were 'scientists' and/or 'ornithologists'!

                                                         Look at all these bones!
                                                              Even skulls!

We also did this cool art project!

In math we have been focusing on place value (thousands/hundreds/tens and ones) as well as reviewing basic addition and subtraction facts.  As you can see in the poetry book we have done a Rounding Roller Coaster to help the students to round numbers. If you could review this and practice rounding some numbers that would be great.

Dr. Saul is looking for gumboots.  If anyone has any larger sized rubber boots hanging about they you'd like to donate, please send them into the school. Students do not need to wear boots in their size, it's actually good to wear a size or two too large for this special  'Body Rhythm' work.

Please check your child's planners daily on Monday they write their spelling words, on Wednesday and Thursday night they bring home their spelling duo-tang and the lesson should be completed each week.  Please return this daily, even if it isn't finished!

Just a reminder that this year's Valentines is different!

Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday, Jan. 25 as it is an non-instuctional day.  The spelling quiz went well today and your child should have it in their planner to show you.

Spelling will start on Tuesday instead this week.  As mentioned in my email Spelling Duotangs will come home on Wednesday and Thursday evenings to be completed if your child is not quite finished.  Please return to the school each day though even if not completed.

We are finishing up our Owl unit these last two weeks in January including dissecting owl pellets!  Your children now know so many owl facts!  They will share their cool lap books with you at conferences.

Have a great weekend!

January 15th, 2021

We started a COURAGE unit with Mrs. Neufeld on Thursday.  Each week she will be coming in to help us explore and learn the important skill of taking risks and how we can be more courageous.  We are asking that each week they should be think of an example of when they are showing courage.  For example getting a shot, learning to ride without training wheels, afraid of the dark or heights, etc.

In the Poetry books this week we have some owls poems.  The students have learned so much about owls ask them to tell you some of the things they have learned.  You will be impressed!

Thanks for sending in extra clothes, socks etc., if you haven't already done so or if they have already  them come back wet and dirty please replace them.  Puddles just seem to be like magnets for children!

Thanks for encouraging mask wearing, many more students are wearing them more and appropriately.

We will be starting our spelling next week.  You will receive a letter on Monday explaining the program.

Headphones or earbuds - please send in if you haven't already done so. As we are using them in both reader's workshop and math.

Scholastic - hopefully you got my email saying that the classcode is RC250266

Happy New Year!!

Scholastic was sent home on Thursday.  The kids were excited with some of the books. If you are interested in purchasing any please use the class code on the front of the order.  Your order will be shipped directly to your home but the class does benefit from your orders.

A mask was sent home with any students that requested them. Please wash these and mark with your child's name or initials as they are all the same.  It looks like many of the children got new masks for Christmas, thank you for encouraging your child to wear a mask.  It helps to protect everyone as we learned in our Mystery Doug on Monday.

On Wednesday we had a special OWL presentation.  Zak from Orphanded Wildlife Association taught us so much about owls.   Ask your child some of the intersting facts that they learned!  This was our second 'virtual' field trip this year! We would like to send a big thank you to the PAC as this was money was from last year for field trips!

The students have worked hard on their  2021 goals!  They also had to decide on three ways they can work to reach those goals.  This is also our bulletin board of our snow globes we made before Christmas and our Winter trees!

Today they are bringing home a new years odd/even ADDITION game.  If you could please try to play this over the weekend.  We played this on Monday and discovered that many of us had forgotten what numbers were odd and what were even, so extra practice would be great!

Our winter weather has been extremely wet and rainy, our field is full of lakes so it very important that your child has an extra set of clothing plus socks so if they do get extremely wet they can change.
