February 19th, 2021

A short but busy week. We finally finished the chapter book A Place For Owls By: Kay McKeever.  The children just loved this non-fiction book and were sad that we were at the end.  We have put Kay up on our Author's Tree but they were hoping to write her a letter sharing how much they learned and liked this book, unfortunately though she passed away in 2019.

Courage!  Mrs. Neufeld worked with us on Thursday and we talked about how our feeling change as we use our courage (from before, in the middle and after).

Look at these cool symbols and paintings we did showing how our emotions changed.

Conferences March 4 & 5th - *Please sign up for one conference time/child on the parent portal.  This is the same format as in November.  Every student needs to be part of the Zoom conference, a rough draft of their report card and some of their work will be sent home prior to the conference.  I am looking forward to celebrating your child's learning with you.  Please let me know if you are unable to make any of the times that are listed and we can arrange another time.

Valentines Day homework (from last week) and kindness bingo are in the Poetry Book.  Please ensure that your child completes these before Monday.  The Kindness bingo they did at lunch today but we thought it was important to continue these acts of kindness so we are challenging the students to try to get a blackout on the weekend (colouring in each square once they have completed that act of kindness.

Just a reminder that our library's online Scholastic book fair is on and on Wednesday evenings there is free shipping.  Thanks for supporting Fairview's Library.

Thank you to the PAC for the fantastic outside equipment.  The children love all the different choices and are learning some new skills like badminton, frisbee and football.

Next week:                                                                                                                                              Feb. 24 PINK Shirt and we will be participating in a Kindness Parade.

Feb. 26 Hundred Day  - Bring in a collections!  I am asking that all students make some kind of 100 Day collections.  If you need paper please let me know.  These collections should come to school and will go home that day too.  Use your imaginations!

February 11/21

Our Valentine's Celebration will be tomorrow.  Please have your child bring in their paper valentines tomorrow morning.  Thanks so much to Neena, Brody, Natalie and Sukhraj for providing the treats for our celebration.

Please continue to talk to your child about when they are using or have used their courage.  We are making a Courage Collection of examples of when they need to use their courage! Each week as part of our literacy program, we discuss why we feel courage is so important and explore courage in a great collection of books.  We call it the "safe-risk zone"  SAFE + RISK = LEARNING (e.g.) trying something new, taking risks, standing up for yourself or someone else)

Several classes including Div. 11 have made special paper hugs for a seniors home (Brody's Nona's lives there).  A special thank you to Brody's mom for delivering these for us!  The students were excited making these and we hope the hugs will bring some joy during this difficult time when everyone is missing hugging their loved ones.

Our outdoor journallying was chilly but also a great learning experience.  Ms Penner asked the children to be 'Nature Scientists' and to choose one object in the forest to study closely, write and draw about it.

We won't do spelling next week being it is only a 3 day week for students.  We'll continue with lesson 5 the following week.

Div. 11 has continued our Courage unit with Mrs. Neufeld.  We have started a ''Courage Collection' and have shared things they felt they used their courage to accomplish or do.  We have discussed why we feel courage is so important.  We call it the "safe-risk zone"  SAFE + RISK = LEARNING.

Ground Hog Day Math game is in their Poetry Book duo tang.  The students really enjoyed these games and asked for both to be sent home.  Please take some time to play this game as it reinforces their addition skills and also the rule of +/- 10 rule.
